Mr. Zeb Gene “Sarge” Heintz, 98, passed away on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at Tucker Hospice House.
A funeral service will be held 11 am, Saturday, January 14, 2017 at Wilkinson Funeral Home Chapel, officiated by Rev. Dr. Mark Erickson. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park with full military honors by the Cabarrus Co. Veterans Honor Guard. The family will receive friends from 10-11 prior to the service.
Gene was born on August 9, 1918 in Pamlico, SC to the late Zeb Vance and Margaret Bost Heintz. He is also preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Catherine Bassinger Heintz; brothers, Norman (Gabe) Heintz, Max Heintz; sisters, Mae Sherill, Arlene Heintz, Frances Richardson, Mildred Gaddy.
Gene was a WWII Veteran serving in Panama where he was a Sargent over the mess hall. After discharge he was a meat cutter with former Cook Packing Co. and market manager at Stop N Shop in Concord. His experience as a cook in the military trained him to later swap recipes with customers while at Stop N Shop. He was a great cook and enjoyed trying something new. He loved spending time with his family and with his horses. He enjoyed teaching his grandkids how to ride. Gene was very proud of all of his grandkids and great-grandkids. He was also the oldest living member of St. John’s Lutheran Church.
He is survived by his son, Larry G. Heintz(Cynthia); daughter, Nancy Shinn; brother, Everett Heintz(Eb); grandchildren, Brian Heintz(Lisa), Jeff Heintz(Christy), Duane Shinn(Trena), Debra Shinn; great-grandchildren, Bailey and Gracie Shinn.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Tucker Hospice House Staff, VA Homebase Primary Care, Sara Pope and Helena Whitley. Also, special thanks to Coldwater Volunteer Fire Dept. First Responder and Cab. Co. EMS.
