William Franklin Cannon, 91, passed away on Saturday, August 13, 2016.
A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Concord on Thursday, August 18 at 1:00 PM with a visitation to follow in Davis Hall.
Frank was born on September 27, 1924 to Espy and Viola Cannon in Concord, NC. He graduated from Winecoff High School where he excelled at baseball. While attending NC State, he was drafted in the US Army to serve in World War II. Frank served in active combat as part of the 10th Mountain Division in Italy. After the war he resumed playing baseball at Catawba College. After graduation, Frank played professionally for the Red Sox organization.
Frank's first "real" job was coaching basketball and baseball at Harrisburg High.
In 1956 Frank married the love of his life, Connie Russell Cannon. Together they raised a family of four children in their hometown of Concord. During this time he was the Physical Education coach at Stonewall Jackson School for Boys. The Cabarrus County Sports Hall of Fame honored Frank in 2011 by inducting him into their first class. Frank served as both a deacon and elder at First Presbyterian Church where he was a lifelong member. He was preceded in death by his parents as well as his sister, Margaret Fisher.
Left to cherish his memory area is wife of 60 years, Connie Cannon; son, Barry Cannon (Julie); daughters, Carla Durham (Jim), Leslie Bruggeling (Steve), and son Billy (Cheryl). Grandchildren, Gray and Forrest Cannon, James Durham, Lauren Lawrence (Kevin), Caroline and Zachary Durham, Dawn, Shawn, Braeden, Nolan, Jennings and Landon Bruggeling , Christian and Hunter Cannon.
Memorials can be made to The Boys and Girls Club of Cabarrus County or to First Presbyterian Church, Concord.
