Mr. Walter Lee Burr passed away peacefully Monday, February 5, 2024 at his home.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Thursday at Rocky River Presbyterian Church officiated by Rev. Dr. Neal Carter. The family will receive friends following the service in the church Fellowship Hall.
Walt was born January 27, 1933 in Chesterfield County, SC to the late Samuel Benjamin Burr and Queenie Clontz Burr. He was also preceded in death by sisters Inez Blalock, Suzanna Thompson, Alline Smith, Louise Hudson, Clara Hatley, Jessie Lisk, Rose Hutchinson, and Jane Crump, and brothers Sammy Burr and Donald Burr. Walt was retired from Cabarrus County Public Schools as an Industrial Arts teacher at Hartsell School. He was appointed as the first Cabarrus County Fire Marshall in 1974, and served as Jackson Park Fire Chief for eleven years. Walt joined Rocky River Presbyterian Church in 1956, holding many positions including Elder and Deacon. He was also a Master Wood Craftsman, making furniture and other things in his shop. His “happiest times” were spent in that shop.
Walt is survived by his wife of almost 68 years Ann Talbert Burr; son Ben Burr and wife Kim; daughter Betsy B. Biggers and husband Mike; grandchildren Scott Burr, Thomas Burr and Melinda Franklin, Megan Burr and fiancé Hunter Kicklighter, Will Biggers and wife Lenora, Scott Biggers, and Katie Smith and her husband Chris; great grandchildren Michael and Austin Smith, and Everett Biggers; sister-in-law Sandy Burr; extended family members; and special friend Gary Drinnen and his late wife Billie.
