Mr. Thomas L. “Pat” Patterson, 91, passed away on Tuesday, March 29, 2016 at his home.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 3:30 pm on Thursday March 31, 2016 at Wilkinson Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow at 4:00 in the chapel with Rev. Terry Smith officiating. A graveside service with military honors will be held at a later date.
Born on April 7, 1924, in La Grange, Georgia, he was the son of the late Dewey and Cora Lee Patterson. He was also preceded in death by his son, Thomas L. “Tommy” Patterson. He was the oldest of six brothers, all of whom preceded him in death.
Pat was a longtime District Engineer for the North Carolina Department of Transportation and served as Commissioner of Planning and Zoning for the City of Concord. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during World War II as a paratrooper with the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions. He was awarded the Bronze Star, a Purple Heart with Three Oakleaf Clusters, North Africa and European Operations medals, a Good Conduct medal and a Combat Infantry Badge.
Mr. Patterson was also awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, North Carolina’s highest honor. He was an active member of the Cabarrus County Democratic Party and the Mixed Beverage Committee of Concord.
He will be remembered for the kindness and love he showed to others, especially his grandchildren.
Pat is survived by his wife, Tonita Combs Patterson; two daughters, Teresa Larkin and husband, Robert of Gastonia, Patricia Stegall and husband, Mike of Mt. Pleasant; a son, Robbie Patterson and wife, Chandra of Mt. Pleasant; a stepdaughter, Gwendolyn A. Politis and husband, Andy of Harrisburg, and a stepson, John Christopher Nabors, Jr. and wife, Kim of Raleigh. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Dr. Robert Larkin Jr. of Lancaster, PA, John Larkin of Gastonia, Caroline Larkin Efird of Lake Wylie, SC, Michelle Stegall Mackling of Mt. Pleasant, Dr. Jennifer Stegall Zanation of Chapel Hill, Jessica Grace Patterson of Mt. Pleasant, Sophia and Eva Politis of Harrisburg and Christopher Nabors III of Raleigh; great-grandchildren, Katherine and Margaret Larkin of Lancaster, PA, Thomas and Larkin Efird of Gastonia, Christina, Courtney and Connor Mackling of Mt. Pleasant, Brody and Riley Kate Zanation of Chapel Hill. He is survived by a special family friend, Ron Malick and his caring CNA, Kassandra Davis.
