Thomas Andrew ("Andy") Howard, Sr., 65, of Concord, enjoyed his victory over early onset Alzheimer's disease when he joined his Savior on Tuesday, July 5, 2022.
Andy was born on September 26, 1956, to the late John Clark Howard, Sr. and Bernice Moose Howard. He graduated from Concord High School in 1974. He then attended Lenoir Rhyne College in Hickory, receiving a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1978, majoring in Economics. In his junior year, he became a selected member of the Lenoir-Rhyne College A Cappella Choir, and served as a co-manager of the group his senior year. His association with this group is what brought about the initial friendship with his music-major wife.
He began his career with North Carolina National Bank (NCNB) in Greensboro, then moved into inside sales with two Charlotte industrial supply companies, first, Hunter Supply Company, and then Mechanical Supply Company. He was well known amongst his co-workers as an expert in the industry.
Andy was a lifelong Lutheran, having grown up in and then returning to Calvary Lutheran Church in Concord. He was a respected member of many committees, having served on the Congregational Council and being elected President of the congregation numerous times. He also was an active member of the Lutheran Men in Mission, being given an Honorary Life Membership in the North Carolina Lutheran Men. He sang in the Chancel Choir for many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents. John and Bernice Howard. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Vivian Amick Howard, his son Thomas Andrew ("Drew") Howard, Jr. and his wife Maggie of Kannapolis, and his daughter Kathleen Howard Poorman and her husband Michael of Jasper, GA. His granddaughter, Annabelle Poorman, was a true light in his life. He is also survived by his two brothers, Clark Howard (Betty) of Cornelius and Jeff Howard (Jane) of Belmont, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Friday, July 8, from 2 pm until 3:30 pm at Calvary Lutheran Church in Concord. The funeral service will begin at 4 pm, officiated by Pastor Debbie Frye.
Many thanks go to the employees of Concord Place and especially St. Andrews Assisted Living Center who aided in Andy's care in his final struggles with Alzheimer's.
