Mr. Thomas "Carl" Comer age 85, passed away at his home Tuesday, March 11, 2025, with his beloved wife by his side.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 15th at 2 pm at First Baptist Church Concord, officiated by Dr. Jim Collier and Pastor Aaron Edwards. The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the sanctuary. A family burial will be held prior to the service.
Carl was born June 12, 1939, in Cameron, NC to the late Luther Franklin Comer and Florence Bailey Comer. Carl was also preceded in death by brother Frank Comer, Jr., sisters Dot Thomas, Peggy Jordan, Anne Lambert, and Mary Ruth Deese.
Carl was one of 8 children raised on a family tobacco farm where he learned the importance of family and the value of hard work, however he never aspired to follow in his father's footsteps. He met the love of his life in high school, but the first date almost ended it all as he was late and she left for church without him. She eventually gave him another chance and they have been together ever since.
He graduated from Cameron High School in 1957, attended Mars Hill College, transferred to NC State and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Recreation & Parks Administration in 1962. He then moved his family to Concord and accepted a position with the City of Concord Recreation Department. After several years, he had the opportunity to take a salesman role with Snyder Packaging where he worked until retirement. The Snyders were not only employers but were also an integral part of his family's life.
In 1962, Carl and Peggy joined First Baptist Church Concord where they were faithful committed lifelong members. Carl taught Sunday School for 30 years, served as a deacon multiple times, and held positions on various committees. He was a devoted follower of Christ and lived his life in service to the Lord and his fellow man. He also had a heart for missions and served extensively in the US and internationally in South Africa and Guatemala.
Carl was a die-hard Wolfpack fan and amused many of his children's friends with the "enthusiasm" with which he pulled for the Pack. He loved playing on the church softball team, running, boating, fishing, gardening and golf. A few of his proudest accomplishments were hitting a hole in one in golf, running two marathons, growing his annual summer tomatoes, and finally purchasing his long-awaited bass boat. (In reality it was a combo fishing/ski boat, and he spent the majority of his lake time pulling his three children around on skis.) He made wonderful memories traveling the world, going on golfing adventures, and making the annual Comer beach trip with sometimes up to 60 of his closest family members, a tradition that continues today. He was a great friend to many, but the highlight of his life was his family. He loved nothing better than gathering around the table at the beach with his beloved grandchildren and playing card games, his absolute favorite being "Oh Heck!". And to be clear, he played to win! Those times were so precious to him and there will be a huge hole left in the family without him leading the charge.
Carl is survived by his wife of 63 years Peggy Livengood Comer; daughter Jill (Jim) Wall; sons Tom Comer and Terry (Amanda) Comer; granddaughters Casey Comer, Carly Comer, Bailey Wall, Camryn Chase, Mia Comer; grandsons Tucker (Hannah) Wall, Austin (Anna) Comer, Caleb Comer, Coleson Comer; great grandson Levi Wall; sisters Jean (Dwight) Marsh, and Judy (Tommy) Loving, and sister-in-law Laura Grace Comer; and numerous extended family members.
