Ted Michael Chumley, 91 departed this earth to be with the Lord, Tuesday, September 20, 2017 due to complications following a fall.
He leaves behind all 8 of his children, Glenn, Thomas “Tom” (Melanie), John , Rebecca “Becky” Chavaree (Marc), Eddie Blanton (Kristin), Charles “Chuck” (Pam), Suzanne Nelson (Steve), and Ted, Jr. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and his aunt, Georgia Radford of Memphis.
He was born in Greenfield, TN on November 3, 1925. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles Murray Chumley, Jr. and Rebecca Kimbrough Chumley. Mr. Chumley lived his early years in and around Memphis, TN and the family moved Marion, Ohio where he graduated from high school. He joined the U.S. Army during WWII as a Radio Operations Specialist and was sent overseas to Korea, Okinawa, and the South Pacific, receiving the medal of Good Conduct and a Combat Ribbon as well as an honorable discharge. After the Army he went to his beloved University of Tennessee where he was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. He graduated with a degree in Business Administration. He then moved to Raleigh, NC and opened a Glidden Paint Store. During that time, he met and married Sallie Thomas. They had four children, Glenn, Tom , John and Becky. After they divorced, he married Kay Sloop of Kannapolis, NC. They had four children - Eddie, Chuck, Suzanne and Ted Jr.
Mr. Chumley worked primarily as a successful real estate agent for which he received several awards and public recognition. Later in life he and his best friend Joe Dunn went in on a restaurant venture called “Boardwalk Billy’s”. That little venture has prospered and done quite well due to their other partner Jeff Van Dyke. This has enabled Mr. Chumley to enjoy retirement as he wished.
In the 1960’s and 1970’s he was an avid photographer, photographing the beach, Charlotte Hornets baseball, and abandoned rustic buildings in rural settings. Some of the family’s best treasures are pictures he took of his children. He also experimented with different lenses and angles and developing his own film. He practiced Transcendental Meditation. He read books about Yogananda and was fascinated with UFOs. He was a movie lover, his favorites being James Bond movies and more recently, Lifetime movies and the History Channel. But his favorite of all favorites was ALL University of Tennessee sports! He watched them faithfully even skipping events to watch them. We had to adjust his surprise 90th birthday party around a football game. We will miss that.
The family would like to give a VERY special thank you to Susie Watts and Katherine Ardrey for giving our father friendship and excellent care. You both made him and us happy. We are forever grateful.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity. Per his wishes, there will be a celebration of life at a later date that will be private.
