Mrs. Steva Boone Mervin, dearly loved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away Thursday March 9, 2023 in Charlotte, NC after complications from myelodysplastic syndrome. She was seventy-two years young and spent most of her life between Concord, NC and Cherry Grove, SC
Born on March 7, 1951 in Kinston, NC to Bonnie H. Boone and the late Frederick S. Boone, Steva graduated from UNC Chapel Hill and received her M.Ed. from East Carolina. She spent over 30 years as an educator and teacher mentor, dedicated to improving early childhood programs for marginalized families. At UNC, Steva met Steve. They were married for 49 years, raised two children in Concord and welcomed three grandchildren.
Honey, her grandkids name, which suited her perfectly, was the absolute manifestation of love, service, and fun for all who were lucky enough to know her. She dropped everything for friends or family in need, especially her children and grandchildren, whom she traveled across the world to care for and support. She was happiest at the beach surrounded by her family, especially her grandchildren, and her dogs. Honey greeted the ocean each day (literally), relished her mornings with the dogs at the Cherry Grove point and her evening happy hours with her mom. She was a born and bred Tarheel who delighted at any occasion to watch Carolina basketball or football or to talk trash to the rare Dook fan. She loved traveling, meeting new people and haggling with roadside vendors for that wooden bowl or eleventh nativity scene she just had to have.
Most of all, Honey delighted in welcoming friends and family into her home for most any occasion. She was quick to offer a hug and to ensure you had a peach daiquiri in your hand, delicious food on your plate, or a candy house to decorate. She was warm and funny and made each person who walked through her door feel as if they always belonged there. Honey was a constant for those of us who loved her - a constant source of wisdom and joy and patience and selfless generosity and love. She will be missed terribly.
Steva is survived by her husband, Steve Mervin; son, Skipper Mervin and daughter-in-law, Charlotte White of Carolina Beach, NC; daughter, Stacey M. Dixson and son-in-law, Jeffrey Dixson of Anchorage, AK; grandchildren, Jack Mervin, Sam Dixson and Henry Dixson; mother, Bonnie Boone, sister, Susie Letchworth; brother, Fred Boone, Jr. and sister-in-law, Wendy Boone, and her beloved puppies, Ruby and Beau.
There will be a private memorial on Tuesday, March 14th, followed by a gathering of friends and family at 2:00 PM at Southern Strain Brewery, 165 Brumley Ave NE, Concord. Another gathering will be held at the Cherry Grove point this summer. Dogs and daiquiris and Honey’s spirit will be there.
