Starla Benson Moon, 67, died unexpectedly on December 2, 2017.
Starla was born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota where she lived until completing college at Augustana and earning a teaching degree. She taught for over two decades, beginning her career working with special needs children. She went on to teach middle school, primarily at J.N. Fries, for many years.
Starla was above all a devoted mother and grandmother. She gave everything she had to her family — lovingly prepared meals, thoughtfully selected gifts and the best gift of all, her time.
Her grandsons saw her nearly every day and were blessed by her involvement in their lives, whether cheering them on at sporting events, helping with school work or ensuring that they knew they were loved. Her granddaughters remember her big heart and generous spirit. She took genuine interest in their lives, never missing a Grandparents Day at their school and making sure birthdays and holidays were special.
She is survived by her daughter, Heather Hayes of Charlotte, NC and son, Sean Moon, of Concord, NC as well as her son-in-law, Bob Hayes, and daughter-in-law Emily Beam; 6 grandchildren; 3 brothers, Gary Benson (wife, Allie) of Ridgeland, Mississippi, Duane Benson (wife, Lana) of Belgrade, Montana, Glenn Benson (wife, Cheryl) of Lennox, South Dakota, and sister, Laurie Benson Ticknor (husband, Jim) of Belgrade, Montana.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Joy Brown Benson, and father Arnold Benson.
The service will be held at Wilkinson Funeral Home in Concord, NC on Saturday, December 9th.
The family will welcome visitors at 10:00 AM followed by a service in celebration of her life at
11:00 AM.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Benevolent Fund, cmpbf.org.
