Shirley Mae Hicks Whitley, 82 of Concord, NC passed away on Thursday, May 25, 2017 at the Tucker Hospice House surrounded by her family.
Shirley was born April 20, 1935 in Cabarrus County to the late James Edgar Hicks and Grace Almond Brown both from Concord, NC. She was preceded in death by her brother Worth Hicks and her longtime companion/friend James Ritchie.
The family will receive friends from 2-3 on Sunday, May 28, 2017 at Wilkinson Funeral Home, 100 Branchview Dr., NE, Concord, NC. The funeral service will follow at 3:00 pm in the Wilkinson Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Mike Farley will be officiating. The burial will follow at West Concord Cemetery, Union Cemetery Road, Concord, NC.
She loved her family and grandchildren so much and spent as much time as she could with them including traveling to California. She thoroughly enjoyed fishing at Holden Beach and at Waterway Campground. Before her declining health she loved watching NASCAR Races (Dale Earnhardt was her favorite driver of course).
Ms. Whitley was a graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School. After graduation, she attended the Cabarrus Hospital Nursing Program. She had many challenges in her life and opted to leave before her Nursing Degree was completed.
Survivors include her daughter, Sharon Goodman Honeycutt and husband Tony, of Oakboro, NC; son, Ricky Goodman and wife Katie, of Concord, NC; Debra Ann Ridenhour of Concord, NC and Timothy Ray Ridenhour of Concord, NC, 2 grandchildren Brittany McILwaine and Kayla Barnhardt; 3 step grandchildren Peyton, Cannon Mullis, Jennifer Honeycutt; and her great grandson Elon McILwaine. She loved her little dog “Benji” which was great company for her.
The family would like to extend special thanks for the loving care she received from Hospice of Cabarrus County.
