Mrs. Shelby Jean Powell Stanford passed away Thursday, September 29, 2022 at Morningside of Concord.
A memorial service will be 11:00 am Tuesday, October 4, at First Baptist Church, Concord, NC, officiated by Rev. Jim Collier. The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 am prior to the service.
Jean was born on January 31, 1938 in Duplin County. Her parents were Walter and Alice Kornegay Powell (deceased), and she was raised on a small tobacco farm near Mt Olive, NC. Her family consisted of Alton Powell, brother, Seven Springs (deceased); Carl Powell, brother, Kenansville (deceased); Dulan Powell, brother, Smithfield; Marlene Aldridge, sister, LaGrange (deceased), and Shirley Rouse, LaGrange (deceased).
Jean devoted herself to her family as a Christian homemaker and was an active member of First Baptist Church. As a young woman, she attended Kings Business College in Raleigh, NC. She received a Good Wife Diploma by the NCSU Student Government for support of her husband’s educational degree. She worked with state and county government offices throughout NC, as well as obtaining her insurance license while at Shuford Insurance in Concord, NC. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels and visited with the elderly.
She was known for her excellent cooking, especially her homemade biscuits. She was a dedicated mother and selflessly attended to the needs of her children her whole life. She played hymns on piano, was a seamstress and embroiderer.
Jean is survived by husband, Alvin M. Stanford; children, Walter Stanford and wife Valerie of Kannapolis, Alison Turner and husband John of Concord, Philip Stanford and wife Stephanie of Ashland, VA, and Patricia Hartsell and husband Stephen of Mt. Gilead, NC; grandchildren, Merin Stanford, Hope Turner and husband Jordan Olsen, Caswell Turner Munjas and husband Konner, Autumn Turner, David Stanford and wife Elise, Caleb Stanford, Samuel Hartsell and Caius Hartsell; and many devoted nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family would like to thank the staff of Morningside Assisted Living and Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County for their love and care.
