Motorsports artist and designer Samuel Mark “Sam” Bass, 57, died on the morning of Saturday, Feb. 16, 2019, after a long illness.
Sam’s love of stock car racing was born when the six-year-old met NASCAR legend Bobby Allison at Virginia’s Southside Speedway and joined the popular driver’s fan club. From that moment, the Hopewell, Va., second-grader dreamed of combining his love of stock car racing with his natural talent for illustration.
Sam is survived by his wife Denise W. Bass; daughter Kendyl Madison Bass; son Samuel Mark Bass Jr.; mother Peggy A. Bass of Concord, N.C.; father David H. Bass of Colonial Heights, Va.; and brother Richard A. Bass. In addition to numerous relatives and close personal friends, Sam had many fans worldwide. Sam was also an accomplished and passionate musician.
A service to celebrate his life will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, February 21 at Rocky Ridge United Methodist Church in Concord. The family will greet friends following the service in the fellowship hall until 1:30 pm. A private burial will be held for the family
The family has asked that—in lieu of flowers—donations be made to Rocky Ridge United Methodist Church, 1428 Old Charlotte Rd. SW, Concord, NC 28027; Motor Racing Outreach (MRO), 5555 Concord Pkwy. S., Ste. 405, Concord, NC 28027; and the Flood Sisters Kidney Foundation, P.O. Box 394, Chappaqua, NY 10514.
