It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Sam H. Pelfrey, Jr., a man whose life was defined by steadfast duty, unyielding love of his family, and a deep sense of loyalty. Sam passed away peacefully on Monday, August 12, 2024 at the age of 75, surrounded by his beloved family.
A service will be held for family and close friends on Friday, August 16 at 3:30 pm in the chapel of Wilkinson Funeral Home. A burial with military honors will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:30 to 3:30 pm at the funeral home.
Born on April 13, 1949 in Lexington, Kentucky, Sam was a man of principle and responsibility from an early age. These qualities would guide him throughout his life, most notably during his service to our nation as a marine and Vietnam Veteran. Sam proudly served with honor and distinction, embodying the values of discipline, courage, and resilience for which he was the recipient of a Purple Heart. His love for his country was surpassed only by his devotion to his family and his passion for the Kentucky Wildcats. A man of many passions, Sam’s love for the Kentucky Wildcats was legendary. Rather celebrating a basketball win, cheering on UK football or lamenting a tough loss, Sam’s loyalty to his team was unwavering. These moments of shared joy and camaraderie with family and friends were among his most treasured. He also enjoyed playing softball and spent many hours on the golf course.
For Sam there were no strangers-only friends he hadn’t yet met. Sam was a keen storyteller, and when asked if there was anyone, he wouldn’t talk to he would reply “only those who walk away.” Sam was known for his sometimes-stern demeanor and no-nonsense approach to life, yet those who truly knew him understood the depth of his character. Beneath his gruff exterior lay a heart filled with love and kindness, as well as a smile and a story.
Sam shared his life with Laura, his wife of nearly 29 years; his children, April, Hank (Jennifer), and Matthew; his grandchildren, Chandler, Peyton, and Conner. He was also survived by his brothers, Walter and Allen; numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of other family members. He was preceded in death by his parents and numerous brothers, and sisters.
In lieu of flowers, memorials made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 7023 Merrifield, VA 22116-7023, or to a charity of your choice.
Sam’s legacy of service, loyalty, and love will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. Rest in peace Sam. You were a man of strength, a loving husband, guiding father, and a steadfast friend. Though you are deeply missed, your spirit and the values you lived by will endure in the lives of those you touched.
