Mr. Roy Morrison Casper of Irish Potato Rd., passed away Sunday, March 6, 2016 at his home.
His funeral will be 2 PM Thursday at St. John’s Lutheran Church officiated by Rev. Dr. Mark Ericson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 PM Wednesday at Wilkinson Funeral Home.
Roy was born January 21, 1922 in Cabarrus County on the ancestral family farm to the late John Boyden Casper and Mary Ellen Safrit Casper. There were 4 brothers, Lee, Smoot, Wilson and Bobby, and 2 sisters, Mary Ellen and Jane. He attended first grade at Liberty Ridge and completed school at Mt. Pleasant High School. Later he finished courses in construction and drafting.
He married Doris Estelle Ballard for a marriage of 53 years. Roy cared for her through a 15 year illness at home until her death in 1993.
Roy was the sixth generation on family land since 1777 when his grandfather four times removed, Charles Safrit came from Berks County, Pennsylvania and purchased land among other German families here.
Roy was employed at Cannon Mills 48 years, retiring in 1988 as supervisor and buyer for the Carpenter Shop. He continued to farm and raise beef cattle. He was a life- long member of St. John’s Lutheran Church and the Goins/Neusome Class, serving as treasurer. He served as head usher, chairman of the property committee, the Lutheran Men in Mission, and church council. He received the Men in Mission life membership. Roy was an active of the N.C. Cattleman’s Association and the Mt. Pleasant Lion’s Club where he was honored with the Jack Strickley award. He was a charter member of Coldwater Fire Department and long time treasurer. He exhibited civil leadership on the board of the Cabarrus County Democratic Party. He particularly enjoyed the lifelong fellowship and friendships in the Senior Citizen Center, and was active member of the Cabarrus Democratic party, and was a precinct representative to the convention. His dedication of church, family, and duty will live on.
Roy and Doris have 2 daughters, Deane Morrison Moorehead and her husband Bernie, and Anne Elizabeth Shuping and her husband Bob, both of whom are retired educators; granddaughters, Elizabeth Flowers Scott and husband Steven, Jennifer Flowers Aldridge and husband Scott, Susan Shuping, and Meredith Shuping Dorton and husband Roman; great grandchildren, Connor Norris, Logan Norris, Jake Scott, Drew Scott, Sophia Scott, Davis Dorton, Ella Dorton, Yury Shuping, and Savannah Aldridge; brother, Bobby Casper of Concord; sister, Jane C. Faggart of Rockwell; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to his church, St. John’s Lutheran Church, 100 St. John’s Church Rd., Concord, NC 28025 to either the Flower fund, the Heritage Center operating fund, or to the Cemetery fund.
