Ronald "Ron" Schertler

April 25, 1939 — February 6, 2020

Mr. Ronald “Ron” Joseph Schertler, 80, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, February 6, 2020 at his home.

A funeral mass will be held at 1 pm on February 14, 2020 at St. James “The Greater” Catholic Church, officiated by Father Jerome Chavarria. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 pm on February 13, 2020 at Wilkinson Funeral Home.

Ron was born on April 25, 1939, in Covington, Kentucky to the late Frederick Marvin and Mary Louise Schroder Schertler. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Schmidt Schertler.

Ron worked for many years at NASA in Cleveland, OH, as a Physicist. He loved his job and worked on several projects, including the Advanced Communications Technology Satellite. He enjoyed playing tennis, traveling and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a life-long Catholic who was involved with the church and more recently supported Positive Provisions, packing backpacks with food for school children. He also enjoyed spending time at their Surfside Beach house with his wife Peggy, walking the beach and watching the birds and squirrels from their screened-in porch. He was also an avid and talented wood carver. Ron was a patient, kind and generous man who touched many lives and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy O’Neil of Concord, NC; sons, Michael Joseph Schertler and wife, Sandy of Dallas, GA, Rick Tolbert and wife, Laura of Concord, NC; daughters, Diane Schertler Rohlman and husband, Joe of Iowa City, IA, Monica Schertler Humby and husband, Scott of Hamburg, NY, Sandy Tolbert of Concord, NC; sister, Marleen Schertler of Seattle, WA; brothers, David Schertler and wife, Delia of Albuquerque, NM, Roger Schertler and wife, Kathy of Cincinnati, OH; grandchildren, Caitriona, Aaren, Hayden, Donovan and Keegan Schertler; Nicholas, Samuel and Lucy Rohlman; Jessica Humby; and Annalee Tolbert.
