Dr. Robert Eugene Hammonds passed away peacefully surrounded by his family after several years of declining health on Thursday, December 28, 2023.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00pm Tuesday, January 2, 2024 at First Baptist Church of Concord. The family will receive friends following the service in the church Fellowship Hall.
Bob was born on August 11, 1933 in Eatonton, GA to Walter and Ella Hammonds. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Cox Hammonds and their son, Walter Stephen Hammonds.
Bob was a graduate of Mercer University and completed medical school at The Medical College of Georgia in 1958. After serving his residency at Duke University Medical Center, Dr. Hammonds relocated to Concord where he had a successful Ear, Nose and Throat practice from 1965 until his retirement in 1994. He served as Medical Chief of Staff of Atrium Health Cabarrus, formally known as Cabarrus Memorial Hospital. He was an active member of the hospital’s board of directors and as a community representative after his retirement. He served as chair of the board’s Strategic Planning Committee in the early 90’s spearheading the development of the strategic and master facilities plans which laid the groundwork for the dramatic growth of the entire hospital campus. He was the recipient of the North Carolina Hospital Association Trustee Service Award and the Lillibridge Physician award. He served on the NorthEast Foundation board of directors from 2008 –2014.
Dr. Hammonds was devoted to his patients care here in Concord. He had a great love for golf and spending time at the beach. He enjoyed attending The Masters every year and cheering on The University of Georgia Bulldogs. He had a great love for his church, First Baptist Church of Concord where he served on various committees and as Deacon.
He is survived by two sons, Bob Hammonds and wife Cathy of Kannapolis and Scott Hammonds and wife Sara of Concord. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Taylor Hammonds, Mallory Hammonds, Isaac Hammonds, Jacob Hammonds and Davis Hammonds, his great grandson, Liam Reid and his brother, Don Hammonds and wife Betty of Avondale Estates, GA.
The family would like to give a special recognition to Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County for their support. They will be forever grateful for their love and care.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in honor of his great grandson, Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County or the Cabarrus Healthcare Foundation.
