Robert Gregory “Gregg” Cook passed away on January 17th, 2022 on Saint Simons Island, Georgia, surrounded by his family after a short battle with Pancreatic Cancer. He faced this horrible disease with an incredible attitude and never once complained. As a man of great faith, he was confident of his place in heaven. Gregg was an active member of Lovely Lane Chapel at Epworth on Saint Simons, and enjoyed growing the body of small churches throughout his life.
Gregg was born in Concord, NC in 1954 to Wynell and Ken Cook. He attended Concord High School, where he loved playing football. He maintained many childhood friendships and held his classmates in high regard. He attended the University of Georgia, earning both his undergraduate and Masters in Accounting. He was a Phi Kappa Tau and remained an active member and maintained strong friendships with his brothers. Gregg was a die-hard UGA football fan and an avid supporter of the Red Coat Marching Band.
He raised his family in Atlanta, where he worked at Southern Company for over 35 years as an Accountant Manager. Gregg’s greatest pride and joy in his life was his four children. He was a dedicated father that always prioritized their education and setting them up for success in life. He was a passionate supporter of his children’s pursuits and was always heard bragging about them.
After retiring, he moved to Saint Simons and enjoyed island life. He was known for walking the beach and found joy in sunny days, even the cold ones. He found his calling as an accounting professor at the College of Coastal Georgia, and took great pride in teaching his students how to succeed in life, not just in the classroom. He also enjoyed acting and singing, with the Island Players. Gregg’s other passion was dancing—he loved to shag and made so many friends through his love of dancing. Gregg never met a stranger and was loved by many and a friend to all.
On Sunday, he will be buried in his hometown, Concord, North Carolina. Visitation will be at Wilkinson Funeral Home at 1 pm and the graveside service will be at Carolina Memorial Gardens at 3 pm.
Gregg is preceded in death by his brother Randall Bernard Cook, “Randy” and his parents Wynell Goodson Cook and Charles Kenneth Cook, as well as many other family members. He is survived by his four children Charles Candler Cook, Ansley Carsen York, Courtlyn Adair Cook and Cayden Lanier Cook, as well as his brother Bryan Douglas Cook, and many aunts and uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made to the Memorial Scholarship that has been set up at Willingway Rehab in Statesboro, Georgia. It is their hope to afford a family without the financial means the gift of sobriety though this scholarship. Gregg passed away 1 day before his 5 year AA anniversary and was especially proud of and grateful for his sobriety. He leaves behind a legacy of love, loyalty, and respect that will last well beyond his time on Earth.
