Mrs. Rita Josephine (Hume) Kopsick, age 91, passed away on December 10th at the Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis, NC. Rita was under the care of her youngest son, Michael and his family (Crystal, David and Steven), in Kannapolis for the last 7+ years as she dealt with advanced age and health issues. There are no planned services although she was an associate member of the Center Grove Lutheran Church in Kannapolis.
Rita was born in the New York City area and lived in Brooklyn, Queens and later in Gardiner NY. She is preceded in death by her husband: Robert Francis Kopsick (’00) and her parents; Joseph Hume and Bertha Bender, and siblings John Hume, Joseph Hume and Ruth (Hume) DeBatt. Also her step-father Albert Mumma and step-sisters, Lily and Flossie. Surviving sibling is her sister Marie (Hume) Stasuk.
Surviving children: Patricia Lamitola (FL), Paul Kopsick (VA), Julie Dippel (NY), Robert Kopsick (NY) and Michael Kopsick (Kannapolis, NC). Including 10 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Rita grew up during the Great Depression and World War II. She was very active in church and parish activities at St. Brigid’s RCC in Ridgewood and Brooklyn NY. She, like her mother, loved the Brooklyn Dodgers and later the New York Mets. She was also an avid bowler and very active in Scouting. She would later use her sewing skills to become an avid quilter and craftswoman. After moving out of the NYC area in 1967, she developed her strong business skills and personality to have a long career directing food services at the State University of New York at New Paltz. In ‘retirement’ years she helped manage and direct services at the Shawangunk Volunteer Fire Department near Gardiner, NY.
She has touched the lives of many, many people throughout the years. Always thinking of the needs of others and giving of herself in so many ways. Her passing was quiet, but her life was anything but that. A part of her will echo on in the hearts and minds of everyone she helped and that knew her. A true example of unselfishness and the best of Christian morals. “Good one Rita!”
Mom did not want a service or a “big fuss” so just remember her fondly and tell someone a nice story about her and ‘pay it forward!!
