CONCORD- Ray McCoy Blackwelder, 90, passed away Thursday, November 24, 2016 at Hospice of Cabarrus County.
A graveside service will be 3:30 PM Sunday at Oakwood Cemetery with Rev. Gene Sherril officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 2:30 PM at Wilkinson Funeral Home.
Ray was born August 15, 1926 to the late James Thomas Blackwelder and Nora Tarlton Blackwelder. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Martha Joyner Blackwelder, who passed away in 2010. Also preceding are sisters, Alice B. Dorton, Adelaide Blackwelder, Catherine B. Petrea, and a brother, Ralph Blackwelder.
Ray graduated from Winecoff High School in 1943 where he was President of the Student Body and Salutatorian. He spent 3 years in the US Army, being an Accountant in Japan as Head of Finance for 13 months. Ray retired from the US Postal Service after 37 years and continued to work as an Accountant until his recent illness. He was an active member of the Concord Lions Club for 44 years. Twelve years of that time, he worked with the Governor for the Lions Club. He held all offices in the Concord Lions Club, including President. Ray was a Trustee for 17 years at The Boys and Girls Home at Lake Waccamaw, NC, where he had a summer home. He was a Trustee and Officer for 2 years at Vardell Hall Preparatory School and Junior College in Red Springs, NC.
He is survived by his daughter, Cynthia B. Bethune and husband, George of Concord; grandchildren, Heather A. Burns and husband, Jeff of Wake Forest, NC, and Stacie L. Smithson and husband, Ryan of Concord; great-grandchildren, Allison Burns of Wake Forest, NC, Lyla Smithson and Emma Smithson of Concord. He has two surviving sisters, Rena Blackwelder McPhatter of West Jefferson, NC, and Neta Blackwelder Helms of Concord and a number of nieces and nephews.
