Our nation has lost another member of its Greatest Generation. Mr. Ransom “Peewee” Collins, 93, died at his home on Friday, September 2, 2016.
Mr. Collins was the son of the late Dovie and Oscar Collins. He was born in Lee County, VA on October 28, 1922. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 59 years Katherine Taylor Collins, a son Danny Collins and 5 brothers.
Mr. Collins was a veteran of World Wat II where he was a member of the U.S. Navy. He served aboard the USS Swasey mainly in the Pacific including Casablanca.
He was an industrial electrician by trade, an active member of the IBEW for over 60 years, having served as Local Union 379’s president several times. His career included the wiring of the first high rise in Charlotte to his last challenge, the Philip Morris building in Concord.
Mr. Collins is survived by his daughter Sue Riley Frieze (Wayne) of China Grove, his sons Guy “Randy” Collins of the home and Mike Collins (Missy) of Myrtle Beach. Other survivors include his daughter-in-law Sylvia, his sister Imogene Simpson, his brother Joe Collins, seven grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and his beloved horse, Shadow.
Visitation for Mr. Collins will be 6 to 8 PM Monday at Wilkinson Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 11 AM Tuesday at Harmony United Methodist Church. Rev. Thad Brown, Rev. Ken Simpson, and Ken Thompson will officiate.
A special thank you to Peewee’s angels, Nadine, Lori, Laura, Faye, Jessica, and Mary who helped with his care during his illness. Thank you too to Hospice and their amazing people, especially Tessa and Lisa and to his Harmony Methodist church family, especially Rev. Thad Brown and Kay and Ken Thompson for their endless prayers and visits.
