CONCORD- After a year of being bedbound, numerous surgeries, and much suffering, Randy Lynn Childers rose up from his hospital bed and headed to his heavenly home on May 30, 2024. We believe his son, Christopher Childers, met him at the gates and led him to the throne.
Randy’s funeral will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, June 8, at First Presbyterian Church in Kannapolis. The family will receive friends from 11am to 1pm in the sanctuary and will also greet friends following the service. A public graveside service will be held at 11am Monday at Carolina Memorial Park.
Randy was born in Concord on July 16, 1956 to Everett J. and Sara Lynne Sloop Childers. He graduated from Northwest Cabarrus in 1974. One of his greatest mentors was chorus teacher, Richard Keasler. In addition to chorus, he also performed with the County-Wide ensemble. He played Oliver Twist in their production of Oliver. Even though Randy received his acceptance to attend UNC Chapel Hill, he was recruited by Dr. Richard Brewer, chair of the Music Department, to attend Pfeiffer University. In 1978 Randy received his degree in music from Pfeiffer University. During his four years at Pfeiffer he traveled with the choir to European countries where they travelled and performed at various events.
Randy then began his career as Minister of Music where he served that capacity at West Corinth Baptist in Mooresville, Mt. Olivet Methodist in Concord, and North Kannapolis Baptist in Kannapolis. He taught music at elementary schools in Cabarrus County at one point in his career.
Randy performed with numerous choirs including the Piedmont Choral Society. He was often invited to sing at area churches for their musical productions; Concord First Assembly, Matthews UMC, the Charlotte Singing Christmas Tree, and numerous other places.
In 2005, Ed Fink and Randy Childers started the Piedmont Singing Men. This group of talented singers presented inspiring performances of spiritual, seasonal, and patriotic arrangements. Directing this group was one of the greatest joys of Randy’s life. This group actively traveled to churches and community events where they were known to please audiences with their inspiring concerts. Directing this group of wonderful friends represents the highlight of Randy’s musical directing career.
Mr. Childers was preceded in death by a son, Christopher; paternal grandparents, Homer and Viola Harrington Childers; and maternal grandparents, Lynn and Lucille Phillips Sloop.
Randy is survived by his beloved parents; son, Andrew Lynn Childers; daughters, Jessica Woodall (Justin) and Ashlyn Childers; brothers, Todd Childers (Christina) and Alan Childers; sister, Robbie Childers Ruffin (Mike); special nieces, cousins, and friends; Donna Tomberlin Childers, the mother of Andrew and Ashlyn.
Memorials may be made, in lieu of flowers, to First Presbyterian Church of Kannapolis, 201 Vance Street Kannapolis, North Carolina 28081 or Piedmont Residential Center (PRDC), PO Box 909, Concord NC 28026 as they provided compassionate care for Christopher.
