Phyllis Aycock Martin, 81, a life-long resident of Concord and a devoted mother, teacher, sister and friend to many, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2016 at the Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis following a four month battle with cancer.
Phyllis was born July 1, 1934 to John and Kathleen Simpson Aycock. She attended Concord High School and graduated in 1952. She earned an AA degree in music at Meredith College in Raleigh, attended the University of South Carolina and received a BS degree and a MS degree in Mathematics from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
She was a mathematics teacher at her alma mater, Concord High School for over 30 years and also taught mathematics in the engineering department at Rowan Technological Institute for many years. She was a former cheerleader at Concord High School and served as cheerleader sponsor for many years. She was the sponsor for High Q academic team that won the N.C. State Championship for high schools. The Concord High School annual was dedicated to her three times over her career.
At Forest Hill United Methodist Church she served on the Board of Trustees, co-chairman of the columbarium committee, served as a greeter at the Sunday services, volunteered as a tutor at Forest Hill’s After School Program and was the self-proclaimed “hostess” of the churches’ Friday hotdog sale fund raiser.
She was an accomplished pianist and enjoyed music, reading, travel, volunteering, gardening and socializing with her “lunch bunch” groups of high school friends and retired teachers for CHS.
She is survived by her two sons, Gregory M. Martin and wife, Ellen of Raleigh and Jeffery Todd Martin and wife, Kim of Charlotte; long-time companion and best friend, Bill Kale of Concord; a sister, Donna Aycock Ellis and her husband, Jerry of Live Oak, FL; grandchildren, Kathleen, Andrew and Brandi Martin, Crystal Kallenbach and Jamie Langton of Charlotte; two nephews, Jonathan Bradley Ellis of Live Oak, FL and Patrick Scott Ellis of Lake City, FL and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Kathleen Aycock and her daughter, Kelly Kathleen Martin.
A memorial celebration will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 6, 2016 in the historic sanctuary of Forest Hill United Methodist Church, adjacent to the new church on North Union Street in Concord, with the Rev. Suzanne Dornsmith officiating. The family will visit with friends prior to the service from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. in the Community Meeting Room at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Building Fund or Scholarship Fund at Forest Hill United Methodist Church, 265 Union Street N, Concord, NC 28025.
