Mrs. Phyllis “Phyl” Crooks Coltrane passed away Wednesday, May 4, 2016 at the Gardens of Taylor Glen.
Her memorial service will be 11 AM Saturday at First Presbyterian Church Concord officiated by Rev. Peter Bynum. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 PM Friday at Wilkinson Funeral Home and also following the service in Davis Hall at the church.
Phyllis was born October 15, 1922 in Concord to the late Roy Cox Crooks and Cynthia Johnston Crooks. She was preceded in death by her husband, L.D. “Bub” Coltrane III, son Daniel B. Coltrane, and brother Roy C. Crooks, Jr.
Phyl graduated as class Salutatorian from Concord High School. She graduated from Women’s College (UNC-G) with a B.S.S.A. degree and was named as an Outstanding Senior. Phyllis was also involved in Student Government serving as Treasurer and Vice President, and served as President of the Alumni Association. She married L.D. “Bub” Coltrane III on April 5, 1943.
Phyllis was the longest serving member of First Presbyterian Church serving as a Deacon, an Elder and President of Women of the Church, and Sunday School teacher. She received the Presbyterian Women Honorary Life Membership Award and the Charlotte Presbytery Older Adult Award.
She also was active in and helped organize the Salvation Army Auxiliary, helped organize the Red Cross Bloodmobile program, and was awarded the Women of the Year along with Bub receiving the Man of the Year by Business and Professional Woman. Phyllis enjoyed her garden and book clubs, along with knitting, crocheting, bridge, reading, travelling, and her friends and family.
Phyllis is survived by her son, Michael R. Coltrane and wife Loretta of Concord; daughter, Gay Coltrane Ausband and Ted Brewer of Southport, NC; grandchildren, Mark Allen and wife Lindsey of Asheville, NC, Julia Allen and fiancé Josh DeMaury of Charlotte, NC; step-grandchildren, Libby Trible and husband Peter of Warsaw, VA, Zach Ausband and wife April of Asheboro, and Tracy Olander of Salem, Ore.; great- grandson, Branson Allen; and step great-grandchildren , Virginia, Layton, and Ewan Trible, Davis and Camden Ausband.
