Penny was born August 9, 1964 in Concord to Jerald and Nancy Adams Overcash. She received her Nursing degree from the Louise Harkey School of Nursing. After a long career of caring for and helping others she retired from Genteva Home Health Care. When Penny wasn’t helping others she had a multitude of interests and hobbies. One of Penny’s greatest pleasures was working on her mom and dad’s farm feeding the animals and tending to the garden. Penny was incredibly proud of her grandchildren. Antonio, Precious, Kailen, and Joan brought her so much joy. You could often find her spoiling them with their favorite sweets, toys, clothes, and activities. Another great passion of Penny’s was cooking. Penny enjoyed flipping through cooking magazines, watching cooking shows and then recreating those recipes. After Penny began retirement she became highly interested in knitting, which quickly turned into one of her most enjoyable hobbies. She participated in the Helping Hands Ministry at Poplar Tent until her health prevented her from doing so. Penny was the proud Girl Scout leader of troop 205 for many years. She took great pride in teaching and supporting young girls through many of their formative years and helping several girls achieve their Gold Award. Most weekends you could find her at Camp Occoneechee swimming in the lake, instructing archery, canoeing, and cooking over an open flame.
Penny is survived by her husband, Eric Todd Smith; daughters, Amber Smith, Melissa Hogan and husband Kyle, and Erica Verner and husband Benjamin; grandchildren, Antonio Smith, Precious Hooper, Kailen Oakes, Joan Hogan; parents, Jerald and Nancy Overcash; sisters, Teresa Hollmeyer and husband Richmond, and Jill Gilleland and husband Rick; along with extended family members.
