She was born Miriam Angeline Benfield on March 5, 1924. Attending Concord High School and approaching college age, she knew there was not enough money to go to college. However, in 1942, something new came along that was helpful, the 12th grade. Employment with Grants Department Store in downtown Concord, marriage to James Caldwell in 1945, Kayser-Roth Hosiery Mill, employment were all milestones in those years. In addition to those other jobs, homemaking was at the top for many. She loved raising gladiolus and was a former member of Concord ARP Church and former, charter member of Cornerstone Presbyterian Church.
Miriam was preceded in death by her husband, James Caldwell, Sr.; parents, David and Thelma Knowles Benfield; sister, Mary Ann Benfield; brothers, Buddy and Jim Benfield; son-in-law, Barry Powlas.
She is survived by a daughter, Ann Powlas of Faith, NC; sons, Jim Caldwell and wife, Martha of Boone, NC, and David Caldwell of Concord; grandchildren, Amy Hartig and husband, Matt, and Brian Caldwell and wife, Rachel; great-grandchildren, Jackson Hartig, Lily Caldwell, Samuel Hartig, Robert Caldwell and Claire Caldwell; and last but not least, K-9 friends, Julie Powlas and Rudy Hartig, and feline friend, Mazy Grace Caldwell. As her health declined, Miriam found many new health care friends including, Helping Hands Transport Service, staff of CHS-NE, Dermatology Group of the Carolinas, and Hospice of Cabarrus County.
2 Timothy 4:7-8 “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, and I have remained faithful. And now the prize awaits me – the crown of righteousness, which the Lord the righteous judge, will give me on the day of his return. And the prize is not just for me but for all who eagerly look forward to his appearing.” This was part of a letter from Paul to Timothy. This is from our family to our loved one. Dear Mom, we’ll miss you. Enjoy paradise!
Memorials may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Cabarrus County, 5003 Hospice Lane, Kannapolis, NC 28081.
