Mary Nona was born and raised on Staten Island, NY. She was born on September 27, 1938 to James Joseph and Edith L. O’Brein Gallagher. She moved to Long Island where she raised her 3 children and served as bookkeeper and secretary for the business she and her husband owned, then later as church secretary for Victory Church of God in East Patchogue, New York, for many years. Mary Nona was twice widowed. After meeting her second husband she continued her service to others, leading a nursing home ministry through Calvary Lighthouse Church in Lakewood, New Jersey, enjoying sharing the Word and singing hymns with residents. They then moved to Harrisburg, North Carolina where Mary Nona, along with her husband, continued to lead a nursing home ministry. Mary Nona loved her family and friends, and was well loved by all, often being described as a gentle and kind soul. There are few who knew Mary Nona that didn’t often discuss her baking skills, especially her cookies, and eagerly awaited their next delivery of Nona’s cookies. In her later years the name Nona took on new meaning as Mary Nona became a grandmother. Referred to by her grandchildren as Nona, she took great joy in reading, baking, playing with and spending any moment she could with her grandchildren. She felt blessed to have her grandchildren as a part of her life, and her grandchildren know they are truly blessed to have had the time they did with her.
In addition to her parents Mary Nona was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert J. Baaden; her second husband, Daniel M. McMearty; and her sisters, Margurite and Patricia.
Mrs. McMearty is survived by her sons, Michael R. Baaden of Harrisburg and Christopher W. Baaden of Argentina; daughter, Barbara L. Baaden of Mechanicsville NY; Stepchildren, Christine Spiers, Catherine Goodwin, and Daniel McMearty; sister, Edith Rielly of Spring Hill Fl; brother Dr James Gallagher of New Jersey; grandchildren, Molly Baaden, Maddie Baaden, Maci Baaden, Alexandrea Spiers, Tyler Spiers, Thomas Goodwin, James Goodwin, and Andrew Goodwin; and nieces and nephews.
