CONCORD- Mrs. Mary Edith Culp Jarvis, passed away Thursday, May 10, 2018 at Clear Creek in Mint Hill.
Her funeral will be 2 PM Monday at Wilkinson Funeral Home Chapel officiated by Rev. Tony Bradshaw. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Park. The family will receive friends beginning at 12:30 PM at the funeral home.
Mary Edith was born October 5, 1922 in Concord to the late Elbert Ritchie Culp and Gertha Rose Ritchie Culp. She was an outstanding basketball player at Concord High School from 1936 to 1940. She married her adoring husband and high school sweetheart Billy Frank Jarvis on March 22, 1942. They were married for 51 years before his death on July 21, 1993. She was also preceded in death by her sister Anna Lee Dayvault who died October 18, 2017.
During World War II, Bill and Mary worked at the Naval Station on the St. Johns River in Jacksonville, FL where they welded ships. She worked at the Cabarrus Food Center for many years. She retired from Belk’s after many years of teaching classes on needlework, knitting and crochet. She was always ready to help anyone with sewing questions. She retired the second time from Robinson’s Clothing while in her 80’s, where people said she could fix anything when it came to clothing.
Mary Edith was the oldest active member of St. James Lutheran Church, and one of the first to be baptized in the building they have now. She has made many prayer shawls, afghan for the family, friends and the sick. While always happy to help anyone to learn how to knit, crochet or to do needle work.
Bill and Mary Edith were blessed with two children. Linda Rose Jarvis Corzine and husband Bill, and Larry Ray Jarvis and wife Carol. She is also survived by her grandchildren, David Corzine and wife Patti, Billy Corzine, Jr and wife Amy; great grandchildren, Mason and finance Catherine, Alex, Samantha, and Haley Corzine; step grandchildren, Chris Aycoth, and Marty Aycoth and wife Beth; brother, Elbert “Ebb” Ritchie Culp and wife Suzanne; a number extended family including special cousin Brenda Ann Ritchie of Atlanta, GA.
Mary Edith was a loving wife, mother, daughter, sister, grandmother and great grandmother. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
