Martin Boger Foil Jr., a native of Concord, N.C., passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving family, on Monday, July 30, 2018. Martin had many talents and his accomplishments were great. He dearly loved his mill, Tuscarora Yarns, and was considered by many in the textile and apparel industries to be the most talented designer of specialty yarns in the country. He was philanthropic minded and served on numerous charitable and civic boards, including the United Way of the Carolinas, Cabarrus County Boys’ and Girls’ Club, Cabarrus Cooperative Christian Ministry, Presbyterian Healthcare, Hospice of Cabarrus County, Board of Visitors Davidson College, Board of Visitors UNCC and the American Association of Health and Disabilities. He was a lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church in Concord, where he served in various church leadership roles and as a Sunday school teacher.
Martin dedicated his life to national and international brain injury awareness and advocacy after his son, Phil, was injured in 1984. He worked tirelessly with organizations such as Brain Injury Association of N.C., Brain Injury Association of America, International Brain Injury Association and National Brain Injury Research Treatment and Training Foundation. Martin was frequently called upon to testify in Congress to share his expertise on behalf of traumatic brain injury survivors. With his wife Puddin, Martin co-founded Hinds’ Feet Farm, one of the largest providers of brain injury services in the state.
Martin loved to socialize, enjoyed telling stories, as well as a good joke, and learning about others. He always carried a song in his heart; local restaurant goers were frequently treated to his impromptu concerts. He loved the game of golf, was a formidable golfer in his younger years and was a member of the Davidson College golf team. He played several great courses over the years, but Pebble Beach was his favorite. Martin was an avid reader, movie goer and loved watching the Golf Channel. He loved theatre and was fondly known around town as Daddy Warbucks, a role he played twice in Old Courthouse Theater productions of “Annie.”
Martin is survived by three children: Quincy Foil White (Mike), Marty Foil (Lisa) and Mary Foil (Paul); and five grandchildren, Carolyn, HL, and Will Ruth; and Sydney and Avery Foil. He is also survived by two brothers-in-law, William H. Taylor (Blowing Rock) and Thomas W. Glenn (Charlotte), along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
