Martha Huitt Stephens passed on peacefully at the Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis, NC, on the snowy day of February 21, 2020.
She was born in Newton, NC, on October 30, 1943, to James Robert Huitt and Roena Harbinson Huitt.
Martha was a devoted wife and mother, and is survived by her husband of 52 years, Ronald B. Stephens; her two children, Tanya Stephens Henderson and Robert Bryan Stephens; and two grandchildren, Phoebe Claire Henderson and Caroline Grace Stephens.
After graduating as valedictorian from Newton-Conover High School, she earned degrees in English and Library Science from Pfeiffer University. She went on to teach English and French in Maiden, NC, and was librarian at Charles A. Cannon Memorial Library in Concord.
Martha was proud to have served 15 years as administrative secretary to All Saints Episcopal Church, where she was an integral part of their ministry, working closely with bishops and church members alike.
A master at the game of bridge, she also enjoyed tackling NY Times Sunday crosswords, elaborate counted cross-stitch and jigsaw puzzles. Martha was a talented gardener and cook, and also loved reading books and observing birds and other wildlife.
Martha delighted in traveling with her husband. She achieved camping in 38 states, as well as visiting Alaska, the Swiss Alps and other parts of Europe.
Martha was a deeply loving and caring person who will be missed by many.
A memorial service, celebrating Martha's life, will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church on Thursday, February 27, at 1:30pm, officiated by Rev. Nancy Cox. The family will greet friends in the living room following the service.
