CONCORD- On Tuesday, July 9th, 2019, Marjorie “Jody” Josephine Kolaya passed away quietly at home at the age of 89 after battling Alzheimer’s Disease and lung cancer.
Jody was born on November 7th, 1929 in Owensboro, KY to Lee and Anice Bartlett. Jody lived briefly in Alaska before moving to California where she met her husband, Tony, while he was serving in the Marine Corp. Together, they lived in Texas, Florida and Colorado, before settling in North Carolina. They were happily married 43 years. She may be best remembered for the 17 years she spent working at Handy Pantry on Branchview and Derita. After retiring, Jody helped run Exotic Animal Rescue of NC with two of her daughters, nursing animals back to health ranging from lion cubs, birds of prey, llamas, and once, a bear cat in addition to the many dogs that they fostered, adopted, rescued, and helped. She especially loved her two tortoises.
Jody was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony Kolaya and her sister Mary Saalwaechter. She is survived by three daughters, Linda, Debra, and Michelle, three grandchildren, Anthony, Heather and Rachel. And five great grandchildren, Justice, Caelan, Hunter, Cailey, and Khloe, and her niece, Marion.
