Margie Underwood

May 26, 1923 — January 1, 2023

Margie “Goggie” Underwood was a beloved grandmother, mother and wife during her incredible 99 years of life. She passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 1, 2023.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, January 4, 2023 at Wilkinson Funeral Home chapel, officiated by Pastor Julie Hill. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home

Margie lived a model Christian lifestyle by faithfully and diligently serving the Lord. Her unyielding faith was the foundation for her life, work and family.

Margie was born on May 26, 1923 as the only child to Mary Belle and Lonnie Penninger. She graduated from Concord High School and Lenoir Rhyne Secretatial College. Afterwards she went to Washington DC to work for the Quartermaster Office during World War ll.

In 1946 she married her high school sweetheart Robert Underwood, and they were married for 66 years.

Margie worked for 32 years at Concord Telephone Company as a customer service representative. Upon retiring, she volunteered at Cabarrus Memorial Hospital, logging over 4000 hours of service. She also enjoyed performing with the Singing Saints Choral Ensemble at Forest Hills Methodist Church for 25 years.

She was proceeded in death by her parents and husband.

She is survived by her three children; Mary Ingram, Nanette Ericson and husband Bruce and Robert “Bob” Underwood Jr. and wife Mary Margaret. Ten grandchildren: Amy and John Kluttz, Rob and Katie Ferguson, Brooke and Shawn Donilon, Carly and David Bunn, Mary Katherine and Zac Fry, Brianne Underwood and fiancé Rob Grosskopf, Mary Cannon and Collin Frye, Scottie and Michael Mares, Hampton Dickens and Michael Dickens. Eight great-grandchildren: Abby Kluttz, Emmy Ferguson, Winn Ferguson, Cliff Ferguson, Maxwell Donilon, Merritt Donilon, Norah Frye, and Avett Bunn.

To know her was to love her. She was the epitome of grace, humility, intelligence and courage. She was an avid reader and current events expert. She learned to use social media to keep up with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a loyal and faithful friend to more than we can even begin to name.

A special thank you to Saint Andrews Living Center for their love and excellent care they gave our mother.

She had a special place in her heart for the First Presbyterian Church backpack program (PO Box 789, Concord NC 28025) and CVAN (PO Box 1749, Concord NC 28026).

Her greatest treasure was her large family, yet they believe she was the truest treasure. Our lives will forever be altered for the better because of our mother, our Goggie, our friend.
