Laura Young McClellan Alley died on February 20, 2023.
Laura Young was born July 11, 1931 in Concord, NC, the first child of George Brittian and Elizabeth Talbert McClellan, both of whom are now deceased. She attended Coltrane Elementary School and graduated in 1949 from Concord High School. She attended Wake Forest College, which was then in Wake Forest, NC, for one year, then attended Evans Business College in Concord.
On December 16, 1950 she married her high school sweetheart, George Worth (“Ick”) Alley. During the Korean War, Ick served four years in the United States Navy and was stationed in San Diego, California, where their two sons, Britt and Keith were born. They returned to Concord in 1955. They were married for sixty years until Ick’s death on August 18, 2011.
Laura Young was employed as Secretary at Concord Middle School and Concord High School for fifteen years; was a Legal Secretary for four years; and Administrative Assistant at First Presbyterian Church, Concord for fifteen years, before retiring in June, 1996.
She was a life-long member of First Presbyterian Church and assumed many roles of leadership in her church, as well as in the community. In 1982 she was named “Woman of the Year” by The Business & Professional Women’s Club.
In her church, she was one of the first two women to be elected a Deacon; then, later was named the first woman Elder. In 1981, she was awarded an Honorary Life Membership by the Women of the Church organization. That same year, she was elected as the first woman delegate from her church to attend the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church USA’s meeting in Houston, Texas, and served on the Polity Committee.
In her spare time, Laura Young enjoyed playing golf, tennis, and walking. Most of all, she enjoyed being with her family. The addition of a granddaughter, Laura Corinne Alley, brought even more joy!
Laura Young is survived by her sons, Richard Brittian (Britt) Alley and Keith Lee Alley, granddaughter Laura Corinne Alley, all of whom reside in Concord; brother, George McClellan and wife, Elizabeth of Belmont; NC; niece Erin Johnson of Homestead, Florida; niece Ann Brittian Green and husband Jay Green of Belmont, NC; and nephew George McClellan III and wife Misty of Monroe, NC.
A service celebrating Laura Young’s life will be held at First Presbyterian Church, 70 Union St. North, Concord on Saturday, February 25, 2023 at 2 o’clock PM. The family will receive friends following the service in Davis Hall at the church.
