Mrs. Katherine Pegues Mahoney, 78, of Concord, passed away on Monday, June 26, 2023, at her home, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on June 24, 1945, in a farm house in Morven, NC. Becoming one of many families to migrate North in the 1950's, they settled in Queens, NY where she along with her 4 brothers and 2 sisters were raised. After graduating from John Adams High School, she went on to study nursing at Kings County Nursing School where she received her Associates in Nursing in 1966.
She went on to have a steller nursing career spanning over 40 years. Starting in Jamaica Hospital in Queens, NY where she spent 13 years. She retired in 2011 from New Island Hospital as the head operating nurse. By then, she had began training nurses and mentored many. She received recognition and many awards throughout her membership with AORN (Association of Operating Room Nurses) National Council of Negro Women and traveled to spread the word and influence legislation that benefited many nurses nationwide.
For many years, Katherine was a proud member of A.M.E. Zion church of Westbury NY. When she moved to North Carolina, she was quickly embraced by the Bethel A.M.E. Zion Church of Kannapolis, NC where she continued her strong relationship with the A.M.E. Zion organization. She worshipped and devoted herself to prayer. Katherine's faith was the cornerstone of her life, and she often spoke about the importance of prayer and the need to exalt God's name in every aspect of life.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father Alonzo and Athenette Pegues, her beloved husband, Herbert Mahoney, her sister Bernadette McKoy, and her brothers Thomas Pegues, Robert Pegues, and Calvin Pegues.
In addition to her daughters, Reva Lynn Stovall and Charis Mannette Stovall, Katherine is survived by her sister Chandra McMillan of Virginia, her brother Reginald Pegues of New York, her grandchildren Natasha Severino and husband Rafael, Cameron Stovall and wife Chatina, Chandra Joseph and husband Bernard, Christian Stovall and wife Yasmine, and Chrystina Stovall. She also leaves behind her beloved great-grandchildren Nah'maine, Kaydence, Kimora, Camari, Brycen, Ceriya, Ceyona, and Natasha Victoria.
As we mourn Katherine's passing, we give thanks for her many sacrifices which have enriched the lives of all that knew and loved her. We pray that her soul finds peace and comfort in the arms of the Lord, and that her family and friends find solace in the memories of her love and kindness. Katherine will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her spirit and her faith will live on in the hearts of those she touched throughout her life.
A funeral service to honor Katherine's life will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, July 8, 2023, at Wilkinson Funeral Home Chapel. The service will be officiated by Rev. Dr. Charles H. Wilson, Jr., followed by burial at the Bethel AME Zion Church Cemetery. Prior to the service, the family will be available to greet friends at Wilkinson Funeral Home from 11:00am-1:00 pm.
