MINT HILL-Mary Julia Summers McElroy, 90, former resident of Concord passed away October 12, 2018 after a period of declining health.
She will be remembered with a visitation and memorial service to be held at 4pm Thursday, October 18 at Wilkinson Funeral Home.
Born February 12, 1928 in Iredell County, she was the daughter of the late Charles F. and Hila Ellis Summers. She was a graduate of Scotts High School, Class of 1945. She traveled to Washington, DC after graduating and was hired as a clerk at the US Weather Bureau. On August 23, 1946, she married Clyde Ralph McElroy of Shennadoah, Iowa.
Julia and Ralph returned to North Carolina in 1951 and eventually made their home in Concord’s Odell School community where they remained for 40 years. During those years, Julia worked in accounts payable at JC Penney’s and Stop ‘N Shop grocery stores. She was also an accomplished homemaker during these years.
After Ralph’s passing in 1992, she moved to Charlotte and maintained a lovely small home. She spent most of her time enjoying her garden and feeding her beloved squirrels.
Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, James Summers, Richard Summers, and William Summers. She is survived by one daughter, Kathryn Diane, grandson James Frindt and his wife Bu-Nita. She is further survived by two sisters, Dorothy Little and Carolyn Fulp, as well as one brother, Donald Summers and his wife Jean, along with a number of nieces and nephews.
