Joye Sherrill

February 6, 1941 — June 1, 2023

Joye Sherrill, devoted Christian, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and loyal friend, peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, June 1, 2023.

Joye was the only child of Andrew "A.C." and Katie Bennick Hudson. She was born in Concord, North Carolina on February 6, 1941. She graduated from Odell School in 1959. While attending Evans Business College, she worked at Coltrane Webb School in Concord.

She married Roy Mitchell "Mitch" Sherrill, Jr. on May 31, 1959. They were blessed with three beautiful children; Stephanie Suzette born in 1960, Roy Kevin born in 1962 and Joy Michelle born in 1966; whom they raised in their one and only home in Concord.

Joye continued to work while gracefully raising her family and maintaining her commitments to her church. She worked as School Bus Supervisor for Concord City Schools until 1983 and then worked at Cabarrus County Schools until 1993. She retired after 34 years of service to the school system. Retirement allowed her and Mitch yearly visits to the MLB spring training games in Florida. You could often see them on television with her colorful rainbow umbrella hat cheering on the Atlanta Braves. Other seasons they took to the road in their motorhome traveling the country and enjoying gospel concerts along the way.

Joye was a lifelong member of Harmony United Methodist Church where she played the piano and organ for more than 65 years and served as church financial secretary for more than 40 years among other roles and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Gideons International Cabarrus West Camp

In large part to her sweet and welcoming demeanor, Joye and Mitch's home has always had an open door and swinging porch swing frequented by friends and family. The sound of grandchildren and great grandchildren have constantly echoed throughout. Decades of homemade Sunday lunches were cherished by multiple generations.

Joye gave the warmest hugs, best head scratches, the most beautiful hand-written cards and an abundance of love to everyone she knew. She was the voice of reason and advice and a calm listening ear. If she was praying for you, you could rest assured Jesus heard the message.

Joye has truly lived the life we all hope for- although not without her share of pain and sickness. She was blessed to be married to her faithful husband for 64 years. She watched her children marry their own loves and raise the grandchildren she constantly spoiled. More recently, Joye enjoyed watching her eight great-grandchildren and experienced the excitement learning that one more is on the way.

She was proceeded in death by her parents, A.C. and Katie, her parents-in-law, Roy Sr. and Lala Sherrill. She will be greatly missed by her husband Mitch; daughter Stephanie and husband Jeff Campbell, son Kevin and wife Tina, daughter Michelle and husband Jerry Crowell, Jr. Her grandchildren, Sarah and husband Blake Helms - children Hudson, Russ and Charlie; Chelsea Campbell and partner Oliver Snow - children Cian and Penelope; Katelin and husband Nick Currie - children Harper and one on the way; Kaysea and husband Howard Torrence
- children Alaria and Alania; Cody Crowell. Also, sister-in-law Scletta S. Helms, brother-in law Carl Helms, niece Dana Drye, nephews Tristam Bost and Benjamin Nixon.

A visitation service will be held Sunday, June 4, 2023 at Wilkinson Funeral Home from 6:00-8:00 pm. The celebration of life will be held Monday, June 5, 2023 at Harmony United Methodist Church on 101 White Street NW, Concord, NC 28027 at 2:00 pm.
