Joseph John Kuntz, having lived a long and meaningful life, passed away on August 20, 2016. He was born May 15, 1934 in Dayton, Ohio, to the late Helen Neverauskas Kuntz and John Kuntz. He graduated from the University of Dayton. After graduation, he taught in Puerto Rico and New York City before continuing his studies in Switzerland and Louvain, Belgium. He married Evelyn Braun in 1969; the marriage, which was strong and full of joy, produced four wonderful children. Joe was a gentle father who loved reading, Music, travel, home repairs, sports and spending time with his family.
A teacher at heart, Joe returned to NYC and, over the years, worked in management training at Bankers Trust, ran an adult school for Credit Managers and developed adult education programs/seminars for displaced workers in upstate New York. In 1988, he returned to his first love and spent eighteen years teaching Spanish and Latin at Northwest Cabarrus High School. Known as “Don Jose” he was a well-known figure monitoring the halls and giving each student the time and attention he or she needed to succeed.
Joe spent seventeen years in the Society of Mary (Marianists). He remained active in his various Catholic parishes serving in many positions, particularly programs for childhood and adult education. An Eagle Scout himself, until recent years, he was active in Boy Scouts of America and, over the years, held every leadership position.
Joseph is survived by his devoted wife, Evelyn; loving children, Tony Kuntz, Kristina Smith (Brandon), Kevin Kuntz (Norma), and Peter Kuntz (Celeste); and grandsons, Benjamin, Emmett, and Silas. In addition, his sisters Mary Ann Cummins, Barbara Wherry (Marv), Rose Marie Nethery (Gene) and brother Robert Kuntz (Donna) and numerous nieces and nephews who loved their Uncle Joe.
A Funeral Mass will be held at 11AM on Thursday at St. James the Greater Catholic Church, 139 Manor Ave, Concord, NC. The family will receive friends at 10AM at the church.
