Joseph “Joe” George Evankovech, Jr., 72, of Stanfield passed away Wednesday, March 2, 2022 at Tucker Hospice House in Kannapolis with his wife Lee at his bedside.
Joe was born December 25, 1949 in San Francisco, California. His presence became a Christmas gift to many. Joe was predeceased in death by his parents, his youngest sister, and one very special nephew Joey; he is survived by his wife, Lee Withers, three sisters, a brother-in-law, a daughter and son and their children, three nieces, one nephew, and their children. His mom-in-law Ruth and her family will also miss him deeply. He counted his friends as family, too, so generations of children throughout Charlotte affectionately knew him as “Big Joe” and came to play in the countryside at Camp Joe, where they could ride the ATV and explore the woods.
During his youth, he lived in five states, but ultimately settled in his sixth and favorite, North Carolina, where he felt equally at home in the mountains or at a family reunion in Wrightsville Beach. His career reflected his wide range of talents, including golf pro, home builder, and restoration specialist; he retired from Nationwide in Charlotte as an insurance adjuster. In all his work, he put his clients first, determined to make their hopes come true.
Joe had multifaceted interests, fascinated by nature in all its forms and spent every minute possible outdoors. In addition to his love of music, Joe collected guns, rescued kittens, thrilled to the sound of an engine on his heavy equipment, raised heirloom tomatoes, and cared for his chickens as pets.
Although Joe dealt with numerous personal challenges, he always assured everyone that he was having a great life. He had a giant heart, giving generously to anyone in need, and was happiest when cooking a meal for those he loved. In the quiet of night, he had wondrous dreams where he could fly above the earth, and now he is forever free to float over us all as a guardian angel.
In honor of his wishes, a celebration of life will be held down the road.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Humane Society.
