Jewell Rankin Collins

August 21, 1924 — August 5, 2017

Jewel Rankin Penninger Collins, 92, of 3700 Taylor Glen Lane, passed away on August 5, 2017 at her home, Taylor Glen Baptist Retirement Home.

A visitation will be held at Wilkinson Funeral Home on Thursday August 10, 2017 from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be held at Roberta United Methodist Church on Friday, August 11, 2017 at 11:00 am with Rev. Jim Church and Rev. Fred Jordan officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Jewel was born August 21, 1924 in Cabarrus County to the late Hall Gamewell Penninger, Sr. and Martha Dora Miller Penninger. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Ray Humburger and William Zack Collins; siblings, John Penninger, Bernice Penninger Walker, J. Norman Penninger; her precious niece, Cynthia Penninger Hendren , great- niece, Beth Phillips and her beloved Yorkie, Gracie.

Jewel- by her own proud admission came from humble beginnings- a hard working farm family on Poplar Tent Road. Along with the boys and her sister, she milked cows and picked cotton. She loved her life and was devoted to her closeknit family.

She graduated from Harrisburg High School in 1941 and unable to attend college, at 19, she promptly went to work for the Propst Family as a secretary. Being upgraded over the years in responsibilities to executive assistant to Mr. Bill Propst, Sr. and then into business management for their various companies under the corporate umbrella for 38 years. Not just a pretty face of Propst Brothers for conferences, meetings and expositions for the poultry business she attended, she became the executive manager of the 900 acre farm for Arbor Acres in 1955. She learned the business, graduated from schools in Iowa and Pennsylvania that provided training for disease management, sanitation and with stress on detecting it at the first signs of illness in her laboratory on the farm. She was as comfortable in her lab coat, driving a truck around the farm, breeding the 300 lb. mules, raising Shetland ponies, raising Angus cattle as she was in a board room.

She is survived by her baby brother, HG Penninger and his wife, Helen; her nieces and nephews: Brenda Penninger Phillips, Bobby Penninger, Rhonda Walker, Darla Walker Natole, Sheila Jones, Susan Penninger Horne, Adele Penninger Lozito, Shelley Nichols and Gerald Penninger.

She had no children of her own, but formed close bonds with the young couples who served alongside she and her husband, Zach at Roberta United Methodist Church. Jewel has been honored with a lifetime achievement award for her dedication and service to her church. She believed that it was not the number of years one lived that counted, but in her case, the friendships and love that enriched her life. She never forgot God and the precious blessings He bestowed.

Memorials may be made to Roberta United Methodist Church, 3925 Cochran Road, SW Concord, NC 28027.
