Jerry Ronald Mauney, age 85 of Concord, passed away on Saturday, August 5, 2023, at Ann Street Senior Living in Kannapolis after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 13, 2023, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Wilkinson Funeral Home in Concord. Jerry will be laid to rest with full military honors at Salisbury National Cemetery in Salisbury on Monday, August 14, 2023, at 9:00 am. Rev. Dan Gatlyn will officiate.
Jerry was born May 17, 1938, in Charlotte to the late Hazel Pauline White Mauney and Dick Mauney. He was also preceded in death by his grandmother, Vicie Mayhew White, who raised him and lovingly cared for him as her own, and his sisters Doris Anderson and Phyllis Goodson.
Jerry married Vera Marion Wignall on July 6, 1963. They were completely devoted to each other and just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on July 6, 2023.
Jerry was a proud career Air Force veteran who had the opportunity to serve his country all over the world. After he retired from the USAF, he went on to a second career with the U.S. Postal Service. He enjoyed taking care of his yard, working on his woodworking projects, watching NASCAR races on TV, and watching his grandchildren play sports.
Jerry was a proud father, grandfather and great-grandfather who loved spending time with his family. He never met a stranger or missed out on an opportunity to share his testimony. His laughter and many stories will be greatly missed by everyone.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Vera of Concord; children Belinda Smith (Todd) of Charlotte, Steve Mauney (Violet) of Charlotte, Jeff Mauney (Devin) of Monroe and Melody Schillig (Corey) of Columbus; grandchildren Devin, Justin, Zak, Kaylee, Dawson, Noah and Sam; and great-grandchildren Mason, Harrison, Payton, Michael, Eli, Tucker, Joshua and Weston.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ann Street Senior Living, 302 Ann Street, Kannapolis, NC 28081. The family would like to thank the staff there for their excellent and loving care of Jerry, who was lucky enough to be their first official resident.
