James “Jim” Carl Redding, 86, of Concord, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 24, 2018, at Tucker Hospice House.
A memorial service will be held at Epworth United Methodist Church on Thursday, May 31, 2018, at 1:00 pm and officiated by Reverends Linda Bowman and Keith Lowder. The family will receive friends following the service.
He was born in Charlotte to Roy Elmer and Idell Jones Redding on March 12, 1932. His family moved to Concord where James graduated from Hartsell High School in 1950.
After working for Johnson Furniture Company in Concord, James started his career in the trucking industry at Cummins Carolinas Charlotte branch, which later became Cummins Atlantic Inc. He held various supervisory and managerial positions during his accomplished career of 46 years. He retired in 1998 as Vice President of Promotions and Advertising.
James was a leader in his community and church. While living in the Derita community, James volunteered in the Derita Athletic Association and coached youth baseball for many years as well as served as Scout leader for the Boy Scouts of America. James and his wife Mary were active and faithful members of Derita Presbyterian Church for over 30 years where James served in many leadership roles including Clerk of the Session and Chairman of the building committee for the new sanctuary built in the early 1990s. After retirement, James and Mary moved to Concord and joined Epworth United Methodist Church, especially enjoying activities with the senior citizens group.
James was a loving husband, father, and friend. He enjoyed family outings, playing golf with friends at The Club at Irish Creek, and was an avid fan of UNC basketball. He was predeceased by his parents; his wife of 64 years, Mary Tucker Redding; and his sister, Iris Redding Kennedy. James is survived by his sons James Lee Redding and wife Doris of Concord and Joseph Carl Redding and Marsha Ingold of Huntersville; grandsons James Patrick Redding and wife Kathryn Reklis and John Robert Redding; great-grandchildren Phineas and Beatrice Reklis-Redding; brother Coy Elmer Redding; sister Myrtle Redding Wills; sisters–in-law Nancy Tucker Vogler and Janice Tucker Beatty; brothers-in-law Robert Beatty and Archie Kennedy and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the medical personnel at CMC NorthEast, Big Elm Rehabilitative Living Center, Brian Center Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Tucker Hospice House, and Advanced Home Care.
