James “Jimmy” Luther Propst, a beloved lifelong resident of Concord, NC passed away on Friday, April 28, 2023 at Morningside Assisted Living. He was born March 22, 1936 to the late John William “Bill” Propst, Jr. and the late Margaret Propst, nee’ Miller. He was preceded in death by older brothers John William “Billy” Propst, III and Joseph “Joe” Miller Propst. Jimmy graduated from Concord High School in 1955 where he played football for the Concord Spiders, participated in Track and Field, and was a member of the International Thespian Society. After high school, he served in the U.S. Army in Germany. Jimmy attended Lenoir-Rhyne College in Hickory, NC and N.C. State University in Raleigh, NC where he majored in Business Administration, Poultry Science and was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. In 1960, he married Patty Propst, nee’ Almond, from Albemarle. They have 3 sons and a daughter; Tim, Trent, Todd and Sharon.
Jimmy was a respected local businessman for 60+ years. He was Chairman of the Board and CEO of Propst Construction Co., a family-owned Grading and Utility company. After the death of his brother, Joe, he became the President and CEO of Propst Brothers Distributors, an Exxon/Mobil Distributor. Jimmy spent his lifetime in Cabarrus County growing his businesses and serving his community.
He was a founding member of the Cabarrus Rotary Club, Director of the Cabarrus County Boys & Girls Club and District Chairman for the Boy Scouts of America. Jimmy was a Mason-32nd degree and a Shriner. He served his community with dedication for 87 years. Jimmy was an active lifelong member of St. James Lutheran Church, Concord.
In addition to his belief in hard work, he leaves behind a legacy of faith, family and fun. He loved to laugh and teased just about everyone he met, he loved to travel, and he loved a great meal. Jimmy was a dog lover and had them as faithful companions all his life. He liked to play tennis as a young man and golf in his later years. He was short, but he was a natural athlete. Jimmy spent much of his spare time at S.C. beaches with family and friends and spent as many weekends as he could at the Hound Ears Club in the N.C. Mountains.
Jimmy is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Patty of Taylor Glen Retirement Community; chidren, Tim (Patricia) of Concord, Trent (Kelly) of Concord, Todd (Elisa) of Midland, Sharon Dawson (Dene) of Concord. Grandchildren include; Jackson (Anna), Harrison, William, Patrick, Robert (Erin), Abigail (Tate), Davis Dawson and Lacey Dawson, plus 4 great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held at Wilkinson Funeral Home at 100 Branchview Dr. NE from 5:00-8:00 on Thursday, May 4, 2023. The family will hold a private burial service at Oakwood Cemetery followed by a Memorial Service at St. James Lutheran Church at 11:00 on Friday, May 5, 2023.
