James Joyner

December 31, 1969 — April 27, 2022

James Hayden (Sonny) Joyner Jr, 72, of Murrells Inlet passed away at his home, surrounded by loved ones, after a long illness on April 27, 2022.

Mr. Joyner was born May 08, 1949 in Cabarrus County, NC, to James Hayden Joyner Sr. and Thelma Clay Joyner. He was a 1967 graduate of Northwest Cabarrus High School in Concord, NC. In the early days of his music career, he was a member of the popular beach band, The Riverias and also the popular band, Sugarcreek, which he became an honorary member of the Carolina Beach Music Awards in 2017.

Mr. Joyner is predeceased by his father, James Hayden Joyner, Sr; mother, Thelma Clay Joyner and his grandparents, James Baxter and Mary Barnhardt Joyner and HR and Emma Conner Clay.

His is survived by his wife, Sheila Joyner; daughter, Katherine Joyner of Charlotte, NC, Mechia, Lexi, and Katie; stepson, Mickey Drake of Murrells Inlet; stepdaughter, Andrea Drake of Murrells Inlet; grandchildren, Leigha, Nicholas and Alyssa, Shane, Kaitlyn and Ethan, Skylar, and sisters, Doris Joyner Williams (Richard) and Joyce Joyner Lemmond (Ron) all of Concord, NC; brothers-in-law, Jerry Legg (Anita) of Raleigh NC and Glenn Legg (Julie) of Fortson, GA; and mother-in-law, Lucille Legg of Murrells Inlet.

A visitation will be held May 18, 2022 from 12-1 at Royal Oaks United Methodist Church, 1020 Kansas St Kannapolis, NC with a service to follow at 1pm, presided over by Rev. Chad Irons. Burial will be held at a later date.
