Mr. James L. “Lefty” Cook, age 92 of Concord passed away Thursday, February 22, 2024, at Atrium Health Cabarrus, surrounded by his family.
The family will receive friends from 12 to1:45 pm on Monday, February 26th at Cold Springs Global Methodist Church. A funeral service will be held at 2 pm at the church with Pastor Cliff Wall officiating. He will be laid to rest beside his wife in the church cemetery.
Lefty was born April 21, 1931 in Cabarrus County and was the son of Charles T. Cook and Almeta Deese Cook. He was also preceded in death by his devoted wife, Bobbie Loggins Cook, his brothers, Melvin Cook, Jennings, “Hap” Cook, Richard, “Joe” Cook, Frank Cook, and Ralph Cook; sisters, Elizabeth “Lib” Anderson and Nadine Hill.
Lefty proudly served his country in the Famed 101st Airborne Division, U.S. Army, during the Korean Conflict era. Lefty rose rapidly in rank, to the level of staff sergeant. He served as a Field Sergeant, in his beloved 101st “Screaming Eagle” division, “Black Lion”, special regiment. He was a truck driver for Akers Motor Lines and Consolidated Freightways, where he retired. He never met a stranger, and he enjoyed talking to everyone he met. Lefty was an avid NASCAR fan, and enjoyed more than anything, going to his children’s and grandchildren’s high school and college ball games. He never missed any of their games, unless they were so far away, he couldn’t get there. He was a member of Cold Springs Global Methodist Church. Lefty was a wonderful father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, who will be dearly missed by all those who had the privilege of knowing this sweet, gentle man.
Those left to cherish his memory are his sons, James, “Chip” Cook, and Kathy Lee and Dr. Jeffrey Cook and wife, Amy; daughter, Lisa Atwood and husband, Chris; grandchildren, Ryan Cook and wife, Tiara, Dr. Zachary Cook and wife, Melissa, and Collin Cook, Grayson Atwood and wife, Ally, Austin and Allison Atwood; great-grandchildren, Dawson, Caden, Kinsley, Nora and Easton; stepmother-in-law, Mazie Loggins.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the cemetery fund at Cold Springs Global Methodist Church, 2550 Cold Springs Road, Concord, NC 28025.
