Mrs. Iris Carolyn McGill Wilson, 88, of Concord, NC passed away on Tuesday, October 12, 2021 at Morningside of Concord.
A graveside service will be held at 1pm on October 25, 2021 at Highland Memory Gardens in Apopka, FL. The family will greet friends following the graveside service.
Iris was born on October 7, 1933 in Bowling Green, FL to the late Minnie Mae Whidden McGill and Owen Alsey McGill. She is also preceded in death by her husband, La Verne Richard Wilson; step son, Mike Wilson.
Iris was a graduate of Asbury College in Kentucky. Following graduation, she had a long career as an elementary school teacher, retiring after 35 years of service. She continued her work with children following her retirement through substitute teaching, tutoring and as a classroom volunteer for many years.
Iris was a lifelong United Methodist and a member of St. Mark’s UMC in Indialantic, where she served on many committees and volunteered with the Daily Bread program.
She shared a passion for travel with her husband, Vern, and traveled the world and the U. S. extensively.
She is survived by her step sons, Steve Wilson and Doug Wilson; step grandchildren, Stephanie, Andrew, and Brooke; siblings, Delma Lewis McGill (Joan), Jake Allen McGIll (Kitty), Nancy McGill Duncan (Jimmie); several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Asbury University, Office of Development, One Macklem Drive, Wilmore, KY 40390 (Student Scholarships) or St. Mark’s UMC, 2030 N HWY A1A, Indialantic, FL 32903.
