Hieu Luong

June 3, 1953 — January 27, 2024

Mr. Hieu Huu Luong passed away Saturday, January 27, 2024 at Atrium Health Cabarrus.

A wake service and visitation for Hieu will be held 6:00 PM Wednesday at Wilkinson Funeral Home.

Hieu was born June 3, 1953 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam to the late Chung Huu Luong and Dang Thi Lam. He was also preceded in death by his wife Oanh Thuy Nguyen.

At the end of the Vietnam war in 1975, Hieu was able to flee the country with the assistance of the US military. Amidst the chaos, he had to make the heart-wrenching decision to either face persecution at the hands of the Northern communist army or leave his family and his entire community behind. Now as an official refugee, Hieu would travel to Guam, then later California, and then later still to Louisiana where his only community was others who were also refugees. Here is where he would meet his future wife. Then in a wonderful act of charity, Cullen Ferguson, a now-alumnus of WSOC, and his church would sponsor Hieu and his bride-to-be to come to Charlotte, NC. Relentless study and hard work would eventually pay off in the form of various certifications and a burgeoning construction business. After making a name for himself within the Vietnamese community of Charlotte, Hieu would continue on to retire as a career welder/fabricator. Along the way, he would also sponsor his family one-by-one to eventually arrive here in the US from Vietnam. To say Hieu was street-smart would be a huge understatement. He was a master at bartering whether it be with people at the flea market or with hired help and contractors. He was a life-long learner; fascinated with nature programs and military tactics, Hieu also loved classic muscle cars and collecting power tools. He filled his spare time with boating and fishing. In his later years, Youtube became an infinite source of novel information and entertainment. In life he was strict and logical as he wanted the very best for his family. In death he will be remembered as a strong-willed powerhouse of a man, a brother that pioneered a better life for his family, a father of limitless provision and love, and a friend of unwavering loyalty and compassion.

Hieu is survived by his only son Mitchell H. Luong; brothers Tron and Dung; and sisters Nghia, An, Lieu, Phuong, Huong, and Trang Luong.
