Glenda Dean Poston Hoyle, of Lake Ridge, Virginia (formerly of Harrisburg, Chapel Hill, Mooresville, and Lake Lure, North Carolina) passed away on January 1, 2025, after extended hospice care.
Glenda was born on September 26, 1935 to Holmes Nathan and Clara Bell (Cook) Poston of Mooresville, North Carolina. She attended Mooresville schools, as well as Gardner-Webb University and Lenior-Rhyne University. While at Lenoir-Rhyne, Glenda met Larry Donald Hoyle, and they married on November 23, 1958 at First Baptist Church, Mooresville, remaining married until his passing on January 19, 2024. Settling in Harrisburg, North Carolina, they raised two children, Kimberly and Kelly, on Hickory Ridge Road, where Glenda was a librarian at the nearby (former) Harrisburg School. Glenda was an active member of Rocky River Presbyterian Church, where she participated in the Women's Circle, and was known for keeping newborns in the nursery each Sunday alongside her longtime best friend, Ann Talbert Burr, with whom she was also known to share a church hat on a rotating basis.
Glenda was most commonly known for her career as an educator in Cabarrus County Schools. She was less commonly known for (and very proud of) her time working for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), where her efforts were recognized by Bureau Director J. Edgar Hoover in 1956. Glenda's true passion was law enforcement, and she was known by many for her early adoption of concealed carry, regularly carrying her well-known 38 Special. She was also known for her cars, owning three Chrysler convertibles, as well as her sewing, where she created beautiful designs for family and friends.
Glenda was an active volunteer, and most loved her grandchildren, Brian Michael and Laura Beth. She was involved with school activities and care, and she doted lovingly on Brian and Laura her entire life. She loved New York City and would, at short notice, get a flight to spend time with her grandson during his residency in Long Island, New York, and became well-known there as a travel companion to him. She also loved going to the North Carolina State Fair every year with her granddaughter while she was in college. She and Don also spent time at their homes in Chapel Hill and Lake Lure, and traveled multiple times annually to their favorite travel destination, Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where she and Don were welcomed into the Amish community by their many friends there. Glenda had friends everywhere she went; her fiery, independent personality drew people to her. She was always dressed "to the nines," and was known for her clothing and shoe shopping trips to Charleston and Atlanta.
In her final years, she relocated to Northern Virginia with her daughter, Kim, to be close to her grandson, Brian and great-grandson, Mason, whom she got to know well and loved dearly. Glenda loved spending time with family, and in her last days, particularly enjoyed her daily time at her grandson's home.
Glenda was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Larry Donald Hoyle. She is survived by her daughters, Kimberly Hoyle of Lake Ridge, Virginia and Kelly (Frank) Tovornik of Easley, South Carolina; by her grandchildren, Brian Michael Hoyle of Montclair, Virginia and Laura Beth (James) Mattson of Norfolk, Virginia; a great-grandson, Mason James Hoyle, of Montclair, Virginia; and special friend Sherry (Bangle) Hutchins, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
The family wishes to thank Glenda's beloved caregivers, Thuli Oladimeji, Portia Owusu, and Melanie Day, who lovingly cared for Glenda, and were adored by her. Thuli, Portia, and Mel made her last days particularly peaceful, and she loved them as she did her family.
