Mr. George Houston Smith, Sr., 95, of Concord, passed away on Friday, April 29, 2022 at Pruitthealth-Town Center, surrounded by his family.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, May 3, 2022 at Trinity United Church of Christ, officiated by Rev. Nathan King, with burial to follow at Oakwood Cemetery. Please note masks will be required inside the church during the funeral service. The family will receive friends from 6-8 pm on Monday, May 2, 2022 at Wilkinson Funeral Home.
George was born on September 5, 1926 in Cabarrus County to the late Will L. Smith and Rachel Elizabeth Cline Smith. He is also preceded in death by his wife, Retha Claudeen Dobson Smith; brothers, Robert L. Smith, Marvin W. Smith, Willie C. Smith, Richard M. Smith, Carl H. Smith; sisters, Lucille Blackwelder, Mary Elizabeth Kendall, Rachel Juanita Christy.
He is survived by his sons, G. Houston Smith, Jr., Dr. William T. Smith; grandchildren, Naomi Nicole Smith, George Houston Smith III, Sydney Taylor Smith, Logan Riley Smith.
George retired as Concord Chief of Police, serving the City of Concord Police Department for over 40 years. During his career he served as Patrolman, Detective, Detective Sergeant, Detective Lieutenant, Captain of Detectives, Assistant Police Chief, and Chief of Police. He was awarded the North Carolina Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate for his work.
Prior to police service, he served in the U.S. Army for 2 years during WWII. George was a longtime, faithful member of Holy Trinity Reformed Church where he served as an Elder. He also was a life member of the International Association of Police Chiefs, the North Carolina Association of Police Chiefs, North Carolina Police Executive Association, Cabarrus County Law Enforcement and the American Legion.
George was a Master of Stokes Masonic Lodge #32. He also served on the Board of Directors for the following organizations: Cabarrus Chapter American Red Cross, United Way of Cabarrus County, Cabarrus County Cooperative Christian Ministry. George also was a 10-year member of the Concord High School Band Boosters.
