Gay Hopkins

CONCORD- Gay Thomas Hopkins, 83, passed away on January 23, 2025.

A 3:00 PM Friday, January 31, memorial service will be held at Epworth United Methodist Church with Rev. Dennis Marshall officiating. The family will receive friends Friday from 2-3:00pm in the church narthex prior to the service.

Gay was one of four children born to Coy Philmore and Edith Ellen Furr Thomas(Deal). After graduating from A.L Brown High School she went on to earn her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from UNC Charlotte. Mrs. Hopkins was a teacher at Odell Elementary School where she taught kindergarten for 33 years. She also belonged to the teaching sorority, Alpha Delta Kappa. She was a member of Epworth UMC where she served on the finance committee, staff Parrish committee, former youth director, former youth Sunday School teacher, Hot dog ministry, chancel choir, handbell choir, and other leadership roles in the church.

Gay loved her retirement years where she made quilts and got to focus her time on her family that she loved so dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Charles Thomas, and sister, Susie Mullis.

Mrs. Hopkins is survived by her husband, Donald. E. Hopkins; daughter, Myra H. Redding of Concord; sister, Debbie Helsel(Harry)of Concord; brother-in-law, Larry Mullis of Concord; granddaughters, Meredith Pack(Joseph) and Mallory Winstead(Joel); and great grandchildren, Everett, Emma, and Charlie Winstead and Lucy(due in February) and Phoebe and Ezra Pack: and many special nephews and nieces.
