Mrs. John Henry Long, the former Frances Welborn Spears, died Wednesday, February 2 at the age of 104. Born November 6, 1917 she was the daughter of the late Carl Lindley Spears, Sr. and Rose Burleyson Spears and the beloved wife of John Henry Long, who preceded her in 1991. Siblings, Rose Spears Miller and Carl Lindley Spears, Jr. also preceded her. Mrs. Long was a descendent of one of the oldest families in Cabarrus County.
A member of Central United Methodist Church, she served as a Circle Leader, President of the Jesse Boger Sunday School Class and President of the Women of the Church in which she received an Honorary Life Membership. Mrs. Long was a member and sustainer of the Junior Charity League, Historic Cabarrus, Friends of the Library and Esoteric Club. Her long life has been one of service to her family, friends and church. Mrs. Long will be remembered for painting wedding invitations for brides, baking fudge pies, and her love for playing golf and bridge.
She is survived by her nieces and nephew; Caroline Miller Clyburn of North Myrtle Beach, Marion Miller Smith and husband, Frank of Raleigh , Carl Lindley Spears lll and wife, Mandy of Wilmington, Anna Spears Ritchie and husband, Marshall of Wilmington, and great nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express gratitude to the staff of Morningside for the love and care given to Aunt Frances while she was a resident.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 am, on Friday, April 1, 2022 at Oakwood Cemetery, officiated by Rev. Mark King. The family will greet friends following the service.
