Mrs. Evelyn Buchanan Hall, age 88 of Harrisburg, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Saturday, October 14, 2023.
From a small town in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Evelyn and her husband, James, fell in love and eloped. They followed new opportunities to Michigan, and after the births of their first two children, they came back to North Carolina to settle in Charlotte, where they raised their four children: Debbie, Keith, Kenny, and Dana.
Evelyn’s life work was being a wife, mother, and homemaker. Her most ardent passion was her love of family, and a big loving family she did help grow. She was witty, had a generous heart, loved gardening, and was rooted in her faith. She traveled through life embracing the ever changing world around her. She was resilient, determined, and enjoyed taking on challenges. It was fun for her to embrace new technology to stay in touch with her friends, family, and growing number of great-grandchildren.
Many memories were made together talking, and listening to her favorite music by Elvis, the Grand Ole Opry, and gospel. Apart from her love of reading, she was especially known for her cooking. No matter the occasion or menu, everyone looked forward to sitting at her table.
Her love of laughter, and detailed story-telling will sorely be missed, but her family is comforted by the glorious peace that her soul rests with Jesus, and there will one day be a beautiful day of reunion.
Evelyn was born May 22, 1935 in Mitchell County, NC, and was a daughter of the late Audie Samuel Buchanan and Lizzy Mae Duncan Buchanan and stepdaughter of beloved Viola Silvers Buchanan. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James A. Hall, sister, Mary Lee Duvall and brothers, Paul, Audie, James Buchanan, and also her cherished aunt, Oady Gouge who was a major influence in her life.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Debbie Trotter (Tom), Keith Hall (Jim Hardy), Kenny Hall (Nancy), Dana Morris (Ray), and bonus daughter, Melissa Smith (Luke); grandchildren, Emily Vermillion (Adam), Luke Hall (Lillie Allen), Faith Kuhn (Ryan), Cassidy Simoneaux (Daniel), Riley Scott (Timmy Haynes), Hallie Scott (Riley Stubbs), Esther, Nora, and Naomi Smith; great-grandchildren, Banks, Edith, and Shepherd Vermillion, Kaius Kuhn, Bennett Simoneaux, and Logan Haynes; additional close family members include: Eddie and Martha Williams, Judy Buchanan, Carlene, Virginia, Wilma, and Jann Hall, Billy Joe Robinson, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family will receive friends and family on Thursday, October 19 from 11:30 am to 1 pm at Wilkinson Funeral Home in Concord. A funeral service will be held in the chapel at 1 pm with Eddie Williams and Pastor Jesse Watkins officiating. She will be laid to rest at Sunset Memory Gardens in Charlotte.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or Berry Chapel Baptist Church, 280 Chapel St. Spruce Pine, NC 28777.
